Adnoc Distribution yesterday said it would offer reformulated low-sulphur diesel at its filling stations from Tuesday.

The new diesel product will contain 10 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur, compared with 500 ppm of sulphur in its existing diesel.

The launch makes the UAE the first country in the Middle East to implement the mandatory use of low-sulphur diesel.

The company’s announcement follows the UAE Cabinet’s decision to standardise specifications of diesel products as part of updated guidelines announced by Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma).

“Adnoc Distribution is keen to collaborate with its partners to provide the best quality of products and services that preserve the environment and promote public safety,” said Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, the chief executive of Adnoc Distribution.

“The new high-quality diesel product contains a significantly lower percentage of sulphur that will reduce carbon emissions and mitigate their harmful effects on the environment,” he added.

“The new diesel product is also fuel-efficient and will help boost the performance of vehicle engines.”

It was reported in April that Adnoc planned to stop producing 500 ppm diesel in favour of 10 ppm diesel at its largest refinery in Ruwais by August. The company awarded an initial contract for the fuel switchover in 2008 to Illinois-based UOP.

The new diesel product is anticipated to have a positive impact on the air quality of the UAE’s cities, roads and industrial areas, Adnoc said.

“By offering high-quality services at all our services stations in line with the standards and specifications set by Esma, Adnoc Distribution seeks to play a larger role in the implementation of our national strategy to preserve our environment and prevent pollution,” said Mr Al Dhaheri.
