Mahmoud Darwish is considered to be one of the greatest Arab poets of the 20th century.
Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school.
Most of Darwish's work focused on a love and yearning for his homeland and he was regarded as the Palestinians’ poet of resistance.
Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife.
The most notable are Rita and the Rifle and I Yearn for my Mother's Bread. These poems have become revolutionary anthems for generations of Arabs.

The flights
The closest international airport to the TMB trail is Geneva (just over an hour’s drive from the French ski town of Chamonix where most people start and end the walk). Direct flights from the UAE to Geneva are available with Etihad and Emirates from about Dh2,790 including taxes.
The trek
The Tour du Mont Blanc takes about 10 to 14 days to complete if walked in its entirety, but by using the services of a tour operator such as Raw Travel, a shorter “highlights” version allows you to complete the best of the route in a week, from Dh6,750 per person. The trails are blocked by snow from about late October to early May. Most people walk in July and August, but be warned that trails are often uncomfortably busy at this time and it can be very hot. The prime months are June and September.

Retail gloom
Online grocer Ocado revealed retail sales fell 5.7 per cen in its first quarter as customers switched back to pre-pandemic shopping patterns.
It was a tough comparison from a year earlier, when the UK was in lockdown, but on a two-year basis its retail division, a joint venture with Marks&Spencer, rose 31.7 per cent over the quarter.
The group added that a 15 per cent drop in customer basket size offset an 11.6. per cent rise in the number of customer transactions.
