"The Walk", a 1.7km stretch of retail and restaurants and beachfront at
Jumeirah Beach Residence
,
has emerged as a major destination in Dubai
. It's a long way from what it was a year ago. I remember people counting how many windows were lit up at night to show how empty the place was. Now it's quite a scene and the towers are about 78 per cent occupied, according to
Dubai Properties
.
But not all is well on the mezzanine level. Armina Ligaya reports that
retailers there are starting to close
because few of the "between 10,000 and 14,000" visitors to The Walk venture up the stairs. Here's an excerpt from the story:
"Every single retailer, whether they're selling gold, telephones, you name it, no one on the plaza level is even remotely content," Mr Flanagan says. "We're all very unhappy. A number of people have left and a number of people who signed have never started their shops, which compounded the problem."
