UAE’s Opera-pop’s first concert: blending classical opera with pop

It’s quite a mash-up: Elvis Presley’s smash hits with arias by the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. On Wednesday night the UAE-based Opera-Pop Group will be staging their first full-length concert, blending classical opera with pop tracks that the organisers say will appeal to “the young and old”.

The 90-minute show will be the first in a series of concerts featuring the tenors Muratti, who is from Turkey, and Wim Hoste, from Belgium, the soprano Guzel Teymoor from Russia, and the mezzo-soprano Jin-soo Young from South Korea.

“We are promoting opera but in a light style,” says Hoste, adding that the singing remains operatic, but is set to “an upbeat tempo”.

The artists will perform Baroque music in the first half of the show, while the second half will be dedicated to contemporary and crossover music.

The artists will also perform pieces by Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Presley and Frank Sinatra.

“We have broken up the concert, offering different possibilities to the audience,” says Hoste.

“There will be pure opera, but the arias will be simple and even those who’ve never heard opera music will understand it.

“Then there will be opera-pop and a crossover with contemporary music.”

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.

Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.

Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.

For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.

Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.

At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.
