Cricket is all the buzz this week across the UAE with Asia Cup matches taking place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Six teams have been competing, including India and Pakistan. We’ve turned back the clock here with this image from 1984, the year Sharjah hosted what was then known as the Rothmans Asia Cup. It was the first time the tournament was held in the UAE.
That year, the three-team round robin tournament included Sri Lanka, but it was India and Pakistan in the final, with India winning by 54 runs. Imran Khan, the current prime minister of Pakistan, had been named captain of his team in 1982, but did not play in Sharjah due to a stress fracture in his shin. Khan was in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, but did not attend the India-Pakistan game in Dubai, which India won by eight wickets.
