Snakes on a Plane director dies
David R Ellis, the actor-turned-director of Snakes on a Plane, died on Monday at age 60. His body was found in a hotel room in South Africa, but no cause of death has been released. Ellis was in Johannesburg working on Kite, which would have starred the Snakes on a Plane actor Samuel L Jackson. "So talented, so kind, such a good friend. He'll be missed. Gone too soon!" Jackson tweeted. Ellis also helmed Shark Night 3D, The Final Destination and Cellular. - AP
MacFarlane to announce Oscar nods
For the first time in 40 years, the host of the Oscars will help announce the nominations. Seth MacFarlane will join Emma Stone tomorrow to reveal the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards. Winslet's husband fights tabloid
Kate Winslet's new husband has gone to court in London to stop a tabloid from publishing photos of him at what he called an "outrageous" costume party. Ned Rocknroll is asking to bar The Sun from running the pictures, pending the outcome of his invasion of privacy claim. Rocknroll argues there is no public interest in running the photos that were taken in 2010 when he was "a relative nobody". The content of the images was not disclosed. - AP
Baftas announces Rising Stars
The British Academy Film and Television Awards have named the 23-year-old British actress Juno Temple one of five young stars shortlisted for the Bafta Rising Star award. Others in the running are the Life of Pi star Suraj Sharma, the Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, the British-born Andrea Riseborough and the US star Elizabeth Olsen - the younger sister of the Olsen twins. Former Sopranos actor dies at 82
Tony Lip, known for playing a mob kingpin in The Sopranos, died on Friday at age 82, announced his family, who told The Record of New Jersey that Lip had been in failing health in recent years. While best known for playing the mobster Carmine Lupertazzi in The Sopranos, Lip also starred in The Godfather, Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco. - AP
Bowie readies first album in 10 years
David Bowie is celebrating his birthday by releasing new music. The English singer announced on Tuesday, his 66th birthday, that he has released his first song in 10 years titled Where Are We Now? A new album, The Next Day, will be out in March. The single was released on iTunes and in 119 countries. It was produced by his long-time collaborator Tony Visconti. Bowie's last album was 2003's Reality. - AP

ETFs explained
Exhchange traded funds are bought and sold like shares, but operate as index-tracking funds, passively following their chosen indices, such as the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and the FTSE All World, plus a vast range of smaller exchanges and commodities, such as gold, silver, copper sugar, coffee and oil.
ETFs have zero upfront fees and annual charges as low as 0.07 per cent a year, which means you get to keep more of your returns, as actively managed funds can charge as much as 1.5 per cent a year.

Will the pound fall to parity with the dollar?
The idea of pound parity now seems less far-fetched as the risk grows that Britain may split away from the European Union without a deal.
Rupert Harrison, a fund manager at BlackRock, sees the risk of it falling to trade level with the dollar on a no-deal Brexit. The view echoes Morgan Stanley’s recent forecast that the currency can plunge toward $1 (Dh3.67) on such an outcome. That isn’t the majority view yet – a Bloomberg survey this month estimated the pound will slide to $1.10 should the UK exit the bloc without an agreement.
New Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that Britain will leave the EU on the October 31 deadline with or without an agreement, fuelling concern the nation is headed for a disorderly departure and fanning pessimism toward the pound. Sterling has fallen more than 7 per cent in the past three months, the worst performance among major developed-market currencies.
“The pound is at a much lower level now but I still think a no-deal exit would lead to significant volatility and we could be testing parity on a really bad outcome,” said Mr Harrison, who manages more than $10 billion in assets at BlackRock. “We will see this game of chicken continue through August and that’s likely negative for sterling,” he said about the deadlocked Brexit talks.
The pound fell 0.8 per cent to $1.2033 on Friday, its weakest closing level since the 1980s, after a report on the second quarter showed the UK economy shrank for the first time in six years. The data means it is likely the Bank of England will cut interest rates, according to Mizuho Bank.
The BOE said in November that the currency could fall even below $1 in an analysis on possible worst-case Brexit scenarios. Options-based calculations showed around a 6.4 per cent chance of pound-dollar parity in the next one year, markedly higher than 0.2 per cent in early March when prospects of a no-deal outcome were seemingly off the table.
