Shah Rukh Khan sings in Arabic - with some help from Adel Ebrahim

Ever wondered what Shah Rukh Khan would sound like singing in Arabic? Now is your chance to find out, thanks to a fresh take on the song Gerua from the Bollywood star's new film Dilwale, out in cinemas on Wednesday. The vocals for King Khan, originally provided by singing sensation Arijit Singh, are replaced by the voice of Emirati singer Adel Ebrahim.

Watching the video for the song, it is as if the UAE star is both putting the words in Khan’s mouth and virtually duetting with the actress Kajol (whose vocals are sung by Antara Mitra, as in the original).

The song has been renamed Telagena for this remake, and for lifelong Bollywood fan Ebrahim, it's all a thrill.

“I’m excited because Shah Rukh Khan is such a big star,” says the Dubai-based singer.

“In the Bollywood world he is the king – in every city in the world, people know him. For me, I’ve been watching Bollywood movies since I was young and I’ve seen almost all the films he’s been in.

“To have a video where Shah Rukh Khan is singing with your voice is a big thing – I feel like it is me who is singing with Kajol.”

The hardest part, says ­Ebrahim, was translating the ­original. To make the track work, new ­Arabic-language lyrics were ­composed for the romantic ­ballad.

“When you translate [literally], you can’t sing the lyrics that way,” he added. “There are some things that don’t work in Arabic.”

Ebrahim says that he hasn’t even seen the film yet, but will be booking a ticket over the weekend. “Even if I didn’t sing the song, I couldn’t wait to see the film,” he added.

Telagena has been released across the region and North Africa by Sony Music Middle East, and has clocked more than 235,000 views.

But it could be set to go viral – the original Gerua smashed records, becoming the first ­Bollywood video to top 10 million streams within 10 days of release.

Ebrahim says Singh, one of Bolly­wood’s best-loved singers, has a markedly higher range than the Emirati singer is used to.

“I am normally much lower,” says Ebrahim. “I had to really practice to reach his level. It was hard for lots of reasons.”

It is not the first time Ebrahim has tackled a Bollywood ­translation.

He won fans with an "unofficial" Arabic version of Bollywood hit Tum Hi Ho from the 2013 movie Aashiqui 2.

Ebrahim – who normally composes his own music – says his dream collaboration would be to sing with Bollywood playback superstar Sonu Nigam.

The 32-year-old has been singing since his teens and is now established as one of the UAE’s premier vocalists.

He recently thrilled thousands of fans with a National Day performance at Dubai’s Global Village, a performance the singer says ranks as his proudest achievement to date. “As a singer, my dream is simply to to have as many people I can listening to and enjoying my music,” he says.

When he’s not onstage or in the recording studio, Ebrahim works as a manager and radio personality at Al Arabia, one of the region’s biggest Arabic-language radio stations.

His favourite part of the job is getting to research and choose the playlists.

“For a musician, it’s a dream job,” he adds.
