Snowden documentary to get world premiere at New York Film Festival
Laura Poitras' documentary Citizenfour, about the whistle-blower Edward Snowden, will have its world premiere on October 10 at the New York Film Festival, after it was announced as a late addition. Poitras was working on a film about national security and privacy in America when Snowden contacted her – using the name "citizen four" in encrypted emails – about thousands of documents revealing the US National Security Agency's collection of phone and email records. Poitras filmed their subsequent interviews, which appear in the film; and she shared the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service awarded this year to The Washington Post and The Guardian newspapers for their NSA revelations. The New York Film Festival director Kent Jones said the film was a character study of Snowden, a real-life suspense story and a chilling exposé. – AP
Anushka Sharma at London Fashion Week
The Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma was among the special guests at the luxury fashion house Burberry's showcase of the spring-summer 2015 collection at London Fashion Week. Sharma wore a navy-blue Prorsum dress by the fashion label, which she teamed with a printed scarf, a slim belt and an emerald green tote, also by Burberry. The actress will be seen next in Aamir Khan's PK, out in December. She is currently working on Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do, due out next year. – IANS
UN names DiCaprio as a Messenger of Peace
Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio's well-known commitment to preserving the global environment has led to a new role – as a UN Messenger of Peace. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the 39-year-old American actor's focus would be climate-change issues. He joins 11 prominent figures who are peace messengers, including the singer Stevie Wonder and the actors Michael Douglas and George Clooney. DiCaprio will address a climate summit on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting, which 120 world leaders are expected to attend. DiCaprio said: "It is a moment for action. How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet." – AP
