It wasn’t all laid back on Tuesday: there was some serious eveningwear glamour too, at Jenny Packham, Naeem Khan and Dennis Basso.
Packham’s calling card has always been extremely flattering, girlish glitz, and she delivered just that on the day that the Duchess of Cambridge was pictured in Singapore wearing one of Packham’s dresses.
Lots of sequins and embellishment, as always, though with a rather more modernist approach featuring expanses of plain fabric, high-necked and three-quarter-sleeved gowns and some sweet cocktail dresses.
Khan took a similar approach, paring down (relatively speaking) his trademark embellishments into an airy collection with an Art Deco motif and some graphic, dark prints.
Basso, presenting his collection in a jewellery box of a room at the St Regis off 5th Avenue, was all about the grand, flamboyant gesture. Frothing tulle skirts, glossy embroideries, metallic lace, filmy overlays and layers of decadent fringing, all in a limited palette of oyster, black and cornflower or royal blue, meant this was a red-carpet-ready collection.

Going grey? A stylist's advice
If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”
