The Colombia- and Dubai-based BNF Dance Company is bringing its show Tripudium to Dubai this week, featuring an all-Colombian line-up, some of whom are flying in especially.
"The word tripudium means 'dance' in Latin and it was fitting because I wanted to create a show that was a tribute to dance," says BNF's general manager Eider Rua Giraldo.
A band from Colombia will be playing live on stage for the 28 dancers during each of the 11 scheduled acts, which celebrate the most famous dance forms from various countries. The show includes Latin mixed with Arabic music and hip-hop as well as traditional Chinese and Bollywood dances. Some of the acts also feature acrobatics and video projections.
BNF organises the annual World Tango Championship in Colombia and Giraldo says it is their job to be familiar with global dance traditions.
The show, he adds, is not just for those who like music from South America or are dance enthusiasts - its main objective is to increase interest in dance. "People ask us: How do you dance in Dubai? And they are always impressed with the routines we bring. We always tell them the city is very open, but of course we always perform what is within our limits because we respect the culture," says Giraldo.
"The stage itself will be split into four levels, with the dancers at the top and the band below them," he continues. "The most important thing is to provide entertainment of the same level as Cirque du Soleil. It is very powerful and energetic. We do not just use a typical Bollywood or Arabic act - we mix it up with something different for the audience.
"Our job is to be experienced in different rhythms. We are very open and do not stick to the traditional. We take risks," he says.

Checks continue
A High Court judge issued an interim order on Friday suspending a decision by Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots to direct a stop to Brexit agri-food checks at Northern Ireland ports.
Mr Justice Colton said he was making the temporary direction until a judicial review of the minister's unilateral action this week to order a halt to port checks that are required under the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Civil servants have yet to implement the instruction, pending legal clarity on their obligations, and checks are continuing.
