We talk to the new Arab Idol winner, Hazem Sharif after his triumph in Beirut to find out what his plans for the future are.
You were the clear favourite throughout the season. Were you scared that tag could work against you in the final?
I tried my best not to pay attention to it. The two other finalists are also amazing singers in their own right and I believe they have also done enough to be the Arab Idol. All I could do was keep working hard and prove that I deserve to be here. I am happy to finally win the competition.
Part of your prize for winning Arab Idol is a recording contract that has you releasing three singles. Are you disappointed that it wasn't a whole album instead?
Not really. After Arab Idol I always intended to focus on working on new songs and releasing a few singles. To be honest, it is a little bit to early for me to be talking about an album. I just want to take it one step at a time.
Honestly now, if you were an audience member who would have been your choice for Arab Idol?
Well, when it comes to the other finalists Haitham Khalailah and Majed Al Madani I really can’t say because those two have amazing voices. But one voice that I really loved in the competition was of Ammar Kufi. When he was voted out of the competition not long ago I was absolutely shocked. I thought he would have made it to the final.
When you were declared the winner, the first person you ran to celebrate with was your mother. Did she give you any words of advice before the finals?
It was more than that. She has been my biggest supporter period. To have her in the studio today was really important to me. Whenever I felt a little nervous I would just look at her and I would feel confident again. To share this amazing moment with her and the rest of my family is amazing really.
Finally, now that the show is over what is your immediate plans?
I will take a break to gather my thoughts. I have learned that to have a career in the music industry you need to be smart about your choices, so I just want to think about that for a bit. I also need to turn on my phone again and get back to all the friends who supported me and left messages.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.

Classification of skills
A worker is categorised as skilled by the MOHRE based on nine levels given in the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) issued by the International Labour Organisation.
A skilled worker would be someone at a professional level (levels 1 – 5) which includes managers, professionals, technicians and associate professionals, clerical support workers, and service and sales workers.
The worker must also have an attested educational certificate higher than secondary or an equivalent certification, and earn a monthly salary of at least Dh4,000.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
