How 9/11 changed tall buildings

The terrorist attacks in the US 10 years ago today changed the world--and they changed the way tall buildings are built.

The construction industry learned important lessons from the horrors at the World Trade Centre. Those lessons are now evident in buildings around the world, including in the UAE, writes Fast Company reporter Linda Tischler.

Steel support systems have been reconfigured, sprinkler supply lines placed in impact-resistant cores and redundant systems added to prevent the collapse of new buildings. Skyscrapers also routinely include wider staircases and separate stairs for firefighters.

New elevator systems, including one already in place in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest building, also speed evacuations.
