Servicing the same baby boomers who flocked to see the charming film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, David Frankel's drama opts to focus on one marriage so tired it's beyond the pale.
Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones are Kay and Arnold, a couple with the fire of passion long-since extinguished. Kay drags her grumpy wretch of a husband on a therapy retreat, run by an affable marriage guidance counsellor (Steve Carell). While it may feel familiar to some, such awkward home truths do not a great viewing experience make.
Jones is bereft of charm, while Streep seems misplaced as his loyal wife. There's good reason for this couple to be denied access to that exotic hotel.
