Here are some quick and easy tips to ensure your home is ready to welcome the changing season.
• Drain the water heater by running the hot-water tap for 20 minutes. This will help clear out the water that has been stagnant all summer and that may have accumulated bacteria and parasites.
• Switch on the water heater to ensure it’s working, especially when the ambient temperatures are low. In apartments, outdoor drain lines can become blocked by all the sandstorms. Flush them with water. In the event of rain, blocked drains may cause water to seep into your property.
• Check for any cracks, gaps and leaks in your home, and seal to avoid them becoming points of entry for pests.
• Give outdoor equipment – such as barbecue sets, chairs and tables – a good clean, and set them outside on your balcony or in your backyard. Similarly, clear your balcony or backyard.
• If your home tends to remain cool in the winters, invest in a portable fan that can be easily moved from room to room.
