Luckily, there are home remedies to keep your clothes looking relatively new, without having to splash out on weekly dry-cleaning.

Foundation and lipstick are two common stains, but the strategy most women will turn to – attempting to rub the stain off – is a common mistake. All this will do is ­embed the stain further into the fabric. Instead, take a piece of tape and lay it over the stain. Scratch, don’t rub, the top of the tape – using your fingernail – and pull the tape off. Repeat until the entire stain is removed.

If you find a pen mark on your jeans, spray a bit of hairspray directly onto the stain. Blot the stain with a clean piece of cotton until the ink is entirely off the fabric. Rinse with cold water.

As a side note, try this alternative to washing jeans. Place your denim in a large bag, along with a dryer sheet, in the freezer for three or four days to kill any lingering bacteria.
