Home improvements: how to pull off the monochrome look

If you’re looking to introduce an entirely monochromatic colour scheme in your home, there are a few things to consider before you get started.

Firstly, think long and hard about your colour palette. While black and white is the obvious colour combination, consider pairing white with one other colour, but using different tints, tones and shades.

For a black-and-white decor, avoid the Tim Burton look and consider mixing in a third shade. Boldly coloured accents in another eye- catching hue will introduce points of visual interest.

Also incorporate patterns and prints where you can – look to smaller decorative items such as pictures, doorknobs and throws.

If you’re going for a predominantly white colour scheme, make sure to include plenty of texture to stop things from looking too cold and clinical. Cream and ivory are great options, as are pieces such as shaggy rugs and chunky knit quilts.

Finally, if you’ve decided to stick with white and black, think about layering lots of softer shades of grey.
