Home improvements: How to kill lurking germs

There are germs lurking in the most innocuous of places. Here are some hot beds that you may want to address, sooner rather than later.

Your bathroom-cleaning routine will probably cover the bath tub, sink, toilet and floor. After all that scrubbing, it’s easy to neglect things such as tile grouting, which can be a breeding ground for mould. Use tea-tree oil to clean your grouting – it’s antibacterial and kills mould. Dip a piece of cotton wool into the oil, coat the affected area and leave for 30 minutes.

The centrifugal drum of your washing machine may look spotless after each wash, but if it’s not cleaned properly from time to time, you will find your washed clothes smelling less than fresh. To clean your machine, place 50 grams of baking soda into the drum and 50ml of vinegar essence into the top compartment. Wash empty at 60°C. Clean the dispenser with a sponge and water.

Doorknobs, telephones, light switches and remote controls can harbour countless germs. A quick dab with a cloth and some vinegar should do the trick here.
