Home improvements: Home appliance care 101

Home appliances are often either overused or not used enough, both of which can affect their efficiency.

Fridges are accessed all day long, so there’s always the chance of damage due to wear and tear. Check for air leaks caused by tears in door seals (gaskets). A leak can put added pressure on the fridge, resulting in higher electricity consumption. Try to keep your fridge away from your cooking range, oven and any other appliance that may emit high levels of heat. It’s also wise to keep it out of direct sunlight.

A simple way to clean your blender is to fill it with hot water, add a few drops of washing liquid and blend for a few seconds. Rinse the blender thoroughly and leave to dry.

For your microwave, mix lemon juice and water in a bowl and microwave for five minutes. The citrusy steam will absorb odours. Once cool, wipe down the inside.

Washing machines tend to have a buildup of detergent and odours due to the residue that collects in the detergent pocket. Regularly clean the dispenser to remove residue.
