We don’t recommend that you introduce any new plants into your garden at this time of year – but if you still want to put your green fingers to good use, why not create a cactus planter? This will not only help you while away an afternoon or two, but could also leave you with a pretty new centrepiece for your table.
There are plenty of potential receptacles for your mini cactus garden. If you want to keep things simple, opt for a shallow, circular glass vase – otherwise, why not use a watering can, old kettle, tin can, jug or even a colander? As long as you can create drainage holes, you can use it to house your cactus garden. If you need proof of this, check out the California-based artist Rachel Mahlke, who creates stunning planters from stiletto shoes.
Once you’ve decided on your planter, invest in some soil and pebbles – white pebbles are the classic choice, but the colour is up to you. Then choose a selection of cactus plants – again, make sure to play with size and colour. You can introduce some succulents and aloe vera into the mix as well.
Start by placing a layer of rocks at the bottom of your container to help with drainage. Then add your soil, making sure it’s loosely packed, before creating a pretty design with your plants. Et voilà.
