Fashion notes: The pick of fashion week looks

Fashion Week wrapped up last week, and another season of crazy street style is now all over social media, setting the standard for fashion inspiration for the coming months.

As usual, there were some wacky style sights in the fashion capitals. Obnoxious furs in rainbow hues, as sported by Anna Dello Russo, bizarre fur-topped flatform shoes, and worse, fur-lined Gucci slippers (which must have been a nightmare to wear in Europe’s rainy weather) were aplenty.

But the positives highly outweighed the negative styling situations. There was a load of chic layering, as well as a heavy amount of matching outfit separates, especially in suits and ribbed-knitwear sets. In outerwear, the bomber jacket was shown to received an exhilarating makeover, deviating from its typical college-jock, jersey-blend appearance, and showing elevated style appeal, with bright colours, metallic overlays and embellishments of all sorts. Patches, floral appliqués, embroidery and even paint covered the fronts and backs of these jackets, as well as some denim jeans.

The bomber wasn’t the only jacket silhouette that made the rounds – more-masculine shapes were also spotted, like the beige, rather shapeless number worn by Olivia ­Palermo to the Akris show.

In handbags, uninspiring Christian Dior “Diorama” cross-body bags and Louis Vuitton “Neverfull” totes were numerous, but the bag brand of the season is undoubtedly Gucci. While last season’s popular Soho disco bag was scarce, the brand’s iconic Dionysus bag was pretty much everywhere – even in its limited-­edition designs. The one decorated with the pink Gucci blooms motifs, however, will forever be my favourite.

While many wore their bags high around their torsos, so they touched not their hips but rather their waists (probably tightening the straps to their smallest lengths), some took to wearing their small cross-body purses (particularly the mini Fendi Peekaboo bags) around their waists, tying the long shoulder straps as belts. Then there were the quirky bags – box clutches featuring bold eye prints, kitschy three-­dimensional flowers, and even one resembling a Campbell’s tomato-soup can.

It was unfortunate to see that the tremendously tacky ­Moschino phone cases – taking shapes of cigarette packs and Windex spray bottles – are still popular among stylists and fashion bloggers, who were spotted proudly waving them around.

In footwear, there were surprisingly numbered sightings of the coveted Chanel sling-back shoes – perhaps because personal shoppers around the world have bought all of the stock, and are now selling them at double the price.

Meanwhile, slip-on loafers, again by Gucci, proved to be quite popular, along with androgynous brogues, in a variety of colours and embellishments. There were some rare instances of women donning the new-season Dior brocade boots, probably because the narrow, pointed-­toe design will not accommodate most foot shapes. I was happy to see that many women are holding on tight to the whole socks-and-sandals trend, wearing slouchy, glittered grey socks with shiny Miu Miu shoes, chunky platforms and plain trainers.

Mirrored, reflective sunglasses, antique brooches and thin scarves tied tightly round the neck were also frequent sightings, while in terms of tresses, many fashion-week attendees resorted to the half-bun hairdo.
