The logo poster for Varun Dhawan's upcoming action-adventure film, Dishoom, was unveiled by the stars of the film yesterday on Twitter. The logo for the film – which was directed by Dhawan's brother, Rohit, and partly filmed in Abu Dhabi – consists of black and red letters on a black background, with a bullet piercing the letters. Dhawan, 29, also announced that the trailer for the film would be released on Wednesday. Two of the film's other stars, Jacqueline Fernandez and John Abraham, also tweeted links to the poster. Dhawan and Abraham play a pair of cops in the film, which is due for release on July 23 in India. Dishoom also marks the comeback of Akshaye Khanna as the main villain. The 41-year-old was last seen on screen four years ago in Gali Gali Chor Hai. – Sonali Kokra

Hundreds of Mad Men props Up for sale at auction

Fans of the hit TV drama Mad Men are being given the chance to own a part of the show, which ended its acclaimed seven-season run last year. More than 1,500 authenticated props from the 1960s-set AMC show will go on sale in an online auction – organised by prop-sale specialist ScreenBid – that begins on Wednesday and ends on June 15. The auction is curated by the show's property manager, Ellen Freund. "If you've got a good story, a show's going to be successful," she said of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series. "We touched a period in history that people still feel close to." Freund said she received a script eight days before filming and a budget of US$12,000 (Dh44,000) per episode to shop for hundreds of props. They all had to be "authentically vintage" and in pristine condition. Freund would check eBay and other online shopping sites for some props, while others came from her mother, friends of her parents or crew members. – AFP

Bieber sued for copyright infringement

An indie pop singer has filed a copyright violation lawsuit against Justin Bieber, saying the star stole the distinctive vocal riff in his hit Sorry from her. Casey Dienel – who performs under the stage name White Hinterland and is acclaimed in indie-music circles – says she is entitled to "substantial" profits from Bieber's song, and the amount should be determined at a jury trial. Ring the Bell, a track from White Hinterland's third album, Baby, released in 2014, opens with a repeated four-note progression in Dienel's airy voice before synthesisers kick in. Sorry, from the Canadian singer's album Purpose, released in November, is also built on a repeated vocal riff interspersed with a dance beat. Dienel said she repeatedly tried to contact Bieber's team but has had no response. Bieber did not immediately comment on the lawsuit. The suit also names Bieber's songwriters as defendants, including Skrillex, a leading electronic music producer. – AFP

Johnny Depp ordered to stay away from wife

A judge has ordered actor Johnny Depp to stay away from his estranged wife, Amber Heard, after she appeared in court over the weekend with bruises on her face. Judge Carl H Moor also ruled that Depp should not try to contact Heard before a hearing on June 17. Heard said that Depp threw her mobile phone at her during an argument over the weekend, hitting her cheek and eye. She also wrote that the actor pulled her hair, screamed at her and repeatedly hit her and violently grabbed her face. Heard's filing alleges a history of abuse throughout her relationship with Depp, which started after they met on the set of the 2011 film The Rum Diary. – AP

Her face is featured in a promotional graphic with the words: “I am Gisele Bündchen. I am a sea turtle.” Bündchen tweeted: “Much of the world’s wildlife is facing extinction. To overcome this, we need a radical change in people’s attitude.” As part of the campaign, the UN is inviting people around the globe to take a quiz designed to determine their kindred animals. – AP

Normcore explained

Something of a fashion anomaly, normcore is essentially a celebration of the unremarkable. The term was first popularised by an article in New York magazine in 2014 and has been dubbed “ugly”, “bland’ and "anti-style" by fashion writers. It’s hallmarks are comfort, a lack of pretentiousness and neutrality – it is a trend for those who would rather not stand out from the crowd. For the most part, the style is unisex, favouring loose silhouettes, thrift-shop threads, baseball caps and boyish trainers. It is important to note that normcore is not synonymous with cheapness or low quality; there are high-fashion brands, including Parisian label Vetements, that specialise in this style. Embraced by fashion-forward street-style stars around the globe, it’s uptake in the UAE has been relatively slow.
