More proof that whatever Aamir Khan touches turns to gold: trade analysts say the action drama Dhoom 3 has become the first Indian film to gross 501 crore rupees (Dh295 million) worldwide, making it the biggest-earning Bollywood film ever. The gross box office collection in India is 351 crore rupees, while worldwide collections came in at 150 crore rupees. Run Run Shaw dies at 107
The pioneering Hong Kong movie producer Run Run Shaw, whose studio popularised the kung fu genre that influenced Quentin Tarantino and other directors, died on Tuesday. He was 107. No cause of death was given in a statement from Television Broadcasts Limited, which Shaw helped found in 1967. His film studio and television empire helped launch the careers of many stars, including the directors John Woo and Wong Kar-wai and the actor Chow Yun-fat. Shaw also produced a handful of US films, including 1982's Blade Runner and 1979's Meteor. – AP
Eurythmics uniting for Beatles tribute
The Eurythmics are reuniting to pay tribute to The Beatles. Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart will perform as a duo for The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles. The event will be taped in Los Angeles on January 27, a day after the Grammy Awards. While there's no word on which Beatles tune the British duo will perform, John Mayer and Keith Urban will pair up to perform Don't Let Me Down, while Alicia Keys and John Legend will perform Let It Be. Jane Campion to head Cannes jury
The New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion, the only woman to win the coveted Palme d'Or (for The Piano in 1993), will head the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Cannes "is a mythical place and surprising place, where actors reveal themselves, films find their producers and careers are made. I know, it happened to me," the 59-year-old director said in a statement. The 67th Cannes will run from May 14 to 25. — AFP
