The life of a celebrity is a privileged one, awash with flight upgrades, free hotel stays and designer gifts in abundance. The job of showering the stars – including after-race concert headliner Rihanna – with luxury treats this weekend at the 8th Formula 1 Etihad Airways Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, falls to Katherine Raso, who heads the VIP Lounge.
“This is the fifth year we’ve been backstage at the du Arena for F1,” says Raso, the co-founder and general manager of Global Communications Agency.
“Each year, the VIP Lounge returns with a different look and feel, and this year, [Abu Dhabi restaurant] Asia de Cuba is bringing a Latin flair to proceedings. We have a variety of international and local brands and the lounge is open to all celebrities – from concert artists to the racing drivers.”
Inside the goodie bags gifted to visiting musicians, actors and sports personalities will be a carefully chosen selection of apparel, accessories, sweet delicacies and cosmetics.
One label hoping to prove a hit with the celebrities is UAE fashion brand Ayaso Boutique.
“All my pieces are kimonos merged with abaya designs,” says its co-founder, Somaya Soeryadiredja. “We have straight-lined overcoat abayas made from silk chiffon and satin, which are very lightweight. The pieces are very colourful and can be styled up or down for the F1 – either worn over a simple maxi dress or belted with a lace evening dress underneath – and styled with a nice clutch bag for a more glamorous look for the night.”
Top of Soeryadiredja’s wish list is to dress 28-year-old Barbadian singer Rihanna during her visit to the capital.
“I’d love to see her wearing my pieces because she’s so daring in terms of her style,” says the designer.
Helping to ensure the celebrities are picture-perfect, with glowing complexions, during Formula 1 is Bassma Al Banna, the owner of Abu Dhabi organic skincare company, Bait Zait. She will be displaying her latest selection of body scrubs, whipped-creme moisturisers and sea-salt bath soaks in the VIP Lounge.
“All the product ingredients are sourced from the UAE – from the camel milk, date syrup and Arabian coffee to the sand,” she says.
“The weather can be harsh here and palm trees, for example, have learnt to adapt to their surroundings and withstand the elements. In the same way, I take a lot of nutrients from nature to customise my range.
“Camel milk, which I use in many of my products, including soaps, is almost miraculous in the way it cures a lot of ailments and is also hypoallergenic.”
With watches and denim jeans to trucker caps and cookies, those who visit Raso in Abu Dhabi will leave with full tummies and a potential makeover – that is if they decide to leave at all.
“Last year, Blur visited the VIP Lounge and one of the members ended up playing table tennis with a presenter from Virgin Radio,” she says.
“In one of the earlier Formula 1 races, Wyclef Jean, Nickelback and Travie McCoy ended up getting on so well that they had an impromptu jam session within the lounge – luckily Wyclef had brought his own guitar.”

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
