Carriers is a zombie movie without any zombies. The low-budget horror sees four survivors of a mysterious plague (which causes a slow and painful death, rather than cannibalistic tendencies) travelling through a desolate America, avoiding the infected at all costs. With fuel and food in short supply, it's a world of deep suspicion and mistrust where a life can be lost over just a small amount of petrol. Led by the ruthless survivalist Brian (Chris Pine, star of the latest Star Trek movie), the group wear face masks and carry disinfectant everywhere they go. But when one of their number begins to show signs of infection, the rules by which they have come to live are tested and Brian's relationship with his conscience-stricken brother, Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci), is stretched to breaking point. At the heart of the movie is a familiar message - those who will do anything to survive will be the first to lose their humanity, while those who can see the best in others during the worst of times will have a greater chance of riding out the storm. Combining Mad Max, The Road and Dawn of the Dead, there's very little here that we haven't seen before, yet Carriers is far more watchable than it deserves to be. The film is the debut feature from two Spanish brothers, Alex and David Pastor, who make the most of a predictable script and pull-off some stylish visuals. While Pine's character is a little one-dimensional, the actor brings an undeniable intensity and charm to the story.
