Todd Harrell, the bassist of 3 Doors Down, has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after he was involved in a crash that killed another driver, Nashville police said on Saturday. Harrell, 41, clipped a pickup lorry on Friday. The lorry went out of control, sped down an embankment and overturned. The band said in a statement that they were "deeply saddened" by the incident. "Our hearts and prayers go out to [the victim's] family and friends at this difficult time." Reuters

Molly Ringwald releases jazz album

Molly Ringwald has taken on a new role as a jazz singer with the release of her album Except Sometimes, a collection of Great American Songbook and Broadway tunes. The 45-year-old star of the 1980s John Hughes films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink also pays tribute to the late Hughes by reclaiming Don't You (Forget About Me), the theme to The Breakfast Club, turning it into a jazz ballad. Britney Spears sings for Smurfs 2

Britney Spears has recorded a song, titled Ooh La La, for the forthcoming summer movie The Smurfs 2. "I have always loved the Smurfs as a kid and now my boys are the biggest Smurfs fans, ever. I wanted to surprise them with a song in the movie," the singer and mother of two said. The part animated, part live family comedy is scheduled for release in July. Spears, 31, is working on a new studio album following her Femme Fatale release in 2011. AP

Transformers casting call on Chinese TV

Reality television in China will help cast the next Transformers flick. Four people will win roles through the Transformers 4 Chinese Actors Talent Search Reality Show. The series will be broadcast in June. Two of the roles will go to professional Chinese actors and the other two to people with no acting experience. The judges include Sid Ganis, the former Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president who now heads Jiaflix Enterprises, which helped broker a production deal for the film between Paramount Pictures and China Movie Channel. Starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Michael Bay, Transformers 4 is due in June next year. AP

Will.i.am plans to return to school

The Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am says if hadn't entered the world of music he would have been a scientist. "I'm fascinated with quantum physics. That's the reason why I'm going back to school this September to learn computer science," he said, urging young people to look to new technology for opportunities. "If you live in a ghetto and really want not to just change your life and your family's life but change your ghetto's life, make your ghetto a good neighbourhood, learn science, try to be like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs."
