"I haven't let the immense success of my debut film [Vicky Donor, 2012] go to my head," Ayushmann Khurrana said at a Dubai press conference preceding the UAE release of his second film Nautanki Saala this weekend.

“This is just my second film and I have worked every bit as hard on it – if not harder – as I did on my first film. Like any new actor, I have a lot riding on my second film.”

A romantic comedy directed by Rohan Sippy, Nautanki Saala (a name inspired by a dialogue from the 1975 film Sholay, directed by his father Ramesh Sippy) stars Khurrana alongside Kunaal Roy Kapur (the older brother of UTV Films' Siddharth Roy Kapoor) and the actresses Pooja Salvi, Gaelyn Mendonca and Evelyn Sharma.

The film also features a cameo by Abhishek Bachchan, who Sippy regards as a lucky charm.

“This not the kind of comedy that simply makes the audience laugh,” said Sippy about the film. “It has a very good storyline.”

"It is a huge undertaking to make a comedy film that also has a strong storyline," said Khurrana. Both Khurrana and Kapur play  theatre actors in Nautanki Saala.

The film is about the friendship that blossoms between the two after one of them attempts to commit suicide.

Khurana's debut film featured a track he lent his voice to, which went on to win him as much acclaim as his acting. In Nautanki Saala, Khurana sings two songs: Saadi Gali Aaja and Tu Hi Tu.

A special preview screening of the film was held on Wednesday at the Meydan Imax Theatre in Dubai, -organised by the Ministry of Events and Dream Advertising.

Nautanki Saala is currently showing in cinemas across the UAE
