Bachchan carries Olympic torch in London

The Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan carried the Olympic torch on its final leg in London's Southwark on Thursday.

He carried the torch for 300 metres, then passed it on to the English comedian Eddie Izzard and former English rugby players Lawrence Dallaglio and Lewis Moody. "Faced many situations where enormity of crowd and its response was unbelievable. But today with Olympic torch it was indescribable," Bachchan posted on Twitter afterwards. "What can one say? Olympic torch, thousands of fans and cheering people lining the streets, and me given the pride of position. Indebted, honoured, humbled. It is not a flame you hold, it is the pride of 1.25 billion people of India."

Bachchan's forthcoming film appearance is his first Hollywood role, a cameo in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. * IANS

Uday Chopra to focus on US production house

The actor-producer Uday Chopra has announced he is putting his acting career on the back burner to focus on his home banner Yash Raj Films's Hollywood wing, YRF Entertainment, based in Los Angeles. "I feel that this production house is the next best thing I can do. I feel that I can't go beyond a certain point as an actor. I cannot become an Aamir Khan today, I know that. I can't become that big a star, no matter what I do," says Chopra, 39, last seen on the big screen in the 2010 romantic comedy Pyaar Impossible. "I want to try something new, maybe do what my father Yash Chopra has always done, concentrating on the production part. I'm taking a back seat in terms of acting. I might just do a film here or there, but mostly I will be behind the camera." YRF Entertainment has just completed shooting its first Hollywood project, the comedy The Longest Week, directed by Peter Glanz and starring Olivia Wilde, Jason Bateman and Billy Crudup. The studio's next project is the biopic Grace of Monaco, which will star Nicole Kidman. * IANS

A short film chronicling the career of Bollywood's first superstar, who died on July 18, was played at the opening ceremony of the 10-day event. Returning after a two-year hiatus, the festival promises to present an eclectic mix of 175 films from 38 countries, including Iran, the Philippines, Turkey, Morocco and Algeria. "When we decided to revive the festival, we knew we had a daunting task ahead, but what we were clear about is that it would be a bigger, better and a more exciting event," said the festival's director Indu Shrikent. The opening ceremony also saw the Egypt-based film critic Samir Farid being conferred with the lifetime achievement award. This was followed by a screening of the Japanese animated film Asura, directed by Keiichi Sato. * IANS

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.

The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.

These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.

“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.

“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.

“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.

“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”

Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.

There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.

“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.

“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.

“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
