Album review: Orchestra Baobab’s perfect tribute to Ndiouga Dieng

Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng Orchestra Baobab (World Circuit Records) Four stars

Senegal’s Orchestra Baobab honours a deceased bandmate with a spicy mix of African and Cuban tempos. Relying on two saxophone leads and kora player Abdoulaye Cissoko to partly fill in for guitarist Barthelemy Attisso – now busy with a legal career – their effortless ability to create irresistible dance rhythms remains intact even after a 10-year a hiatus. Ndiouga Dieng died in 2016, but his son Alpha sings his songs, while regular vocalists Balla Sidibe and Rudy Gomis continue their strong work. Formed in 1970, the group disbanded in 1987, but reformed in 2001. This is only their third album since then and it is a wonderful addition. Subtlety and insinuation, as much as the percussion and Charlie Ndiaye’s velvety bass guitar, complete the seduction, as they disguise their achievements with the skills of a suave romancer.
