Here's our pick of three films showing today at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. We thought we'd give you a nice mix this time, so there's a children's animation, a documentary about 1950s Egypt and a drama set in London during the Cold War. Beat that for variety.
Moon Man Adapted from Tomi Ungerer's international bestseller, this gorgeously animated tale (film still above) sees the Man in Moon hitch a ride to Earth on a comet, a move that infuriates the president who has just conquered the whole planet and thinks he's being attacked by aliens from afar. After escaping from the president's evil clutches, Moon Man sets off on a long journey, marvelling at the worlds of earth and seeing how much the children need him. Marina Mall, Vox 4, 6.30pm
In Search of Oil and Sand In 1952, several members of Egypt's royal family shot a feature in the desert about a fictitious coup d'etat, just weeks before they themselves were swept from power by a real revolution. This fascinating documentary from Wael Omar and Philippe Dib explores this curious story with the help of video reels only recently unearthed by one of the late King Farouk's distant relatives. Marina Mall, VOx 4, 9pm
Ginger and Rosa Set in 1960s London amid the sexual revolution and the Cold War, this politicised tale of friendship between two teenage girls and the conflicting emotions brought on by the upheavals going on around them features an impressive cast, with Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Christina Hendricks and Timothy Spall.
