Popular spy series Killing Eve is coming to an end after four seasons. The Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer-starrer aired on BBC America, starting in 2018 with the first season written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

A very concise teaser dropped for the BBC show on Tuesday night, showing the two main characters Villanelle (Comer) and Eve Polastri (Oh) standing at a distance on a London bridge.

The series is set to film in summer 2021 and will be shown in 2022, the trailer says. It also adds: "Oh, one more thing, it's the final season."

However, it may not be the end entirely.

Producers, BBC America and AMC Networks, are looking into spin-offs, which would extend the show’s universe.

"Killing Eve has been one of my greatest experiences and I look forward to diving back into Eve's remarkable mind soon," Oh told Variety.

"I’m so grateful for all cast and crew who have brought our story to life and to the fans who have joined us and will be back for our exciting and unpredictable fourth and final season."

The show stars Oh as American intelligence officer Eve Polastri, who works in the UK and gets obsessed over assassin Villanelle.

Oh was previously best known for her role in Grey's Anatomy, in which she played the role of surgeon Cristina Yang. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress – Television Series Drama for Killing Eve in 2019.

"Killing Eve exploded in popular culture and attracted a dedicated and committed fan base from its very first episode," said Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks.

"Waller-Bridge's brilliant adaptation of the source material, the unforgettable characters given life by Oh and Comer, and the entire cast, along with our partners at Sid Gentle Films, have delivered a one-of-a-kind roller coaster ride that has taken our breath away."

"We could not be more thankful for the extraordinary talents and efforts of everyone involved, particularly Sandra and Jodie, who made Killing Eve much more than a television show. We look forward to what is sure to be an unforgettable final season and to exploring potential extensions of this compelling universe."

Possible spin-offs

No details of the spin-offs have been released as of yet, however industry insiders have described an Oh or Comer-standalone show as "unlikely".

There are plenty of standout characters within the cast that could carry a potential spin-off, though.

A prequel that explores the complicated relationship between head of MI6's Russia desk Carolyn Martens (Fiona Shaw) and Konstantin Vasiliev (Kim Bodnia), handler for The Twelve, perhaps?
