Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daughter is taking part in the family business.
At 18 years old, Simone Johnson has become the youngest person to sign a contract with WWE, the wrestling organisation where The Rock made his name before becoming one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood.
He revealed the news during a virtual interview with Jimmy Fallon, saying: "She signed her contract with the WWE, it just blows my mind. First of all, I mean, what an honour that my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps. But, more importantly, 'follow in my footsteps' sounds cliche, but she actually wants to blaze her own path, which is just so important. She wound up being the youngest signee in the history of the company."
The Rock said that his daughter had been working towards joining the wrestling organisation since she was 16.
“Quietly, under the radar, in the ring, getting thrown around, and all the bumps and bruises that go with pro wrestling," Johnson said. "She hung in there. I'm very, very proud of her."
The Johnson family has been carving out careers in wrestling for four generations now. Both The Rock's father, Rocky Johnson, and his grandfather, Peter Maivia, were professional wrestlers and inductees of the WWE Hall of Fame. Rocky Johnson died earlier this year at the age of 75.
With Simone as the youngest signee of the WWE, we take a look at three of the youngest talents currently at the wrestling organisation.
Rhea Ripley
At 23, Rhea Ripley – whose real name is Demi Bennett – is the youngest current superstar at WWE. She signed with the company in 2017, when she was 21 years old and performs on the NXT brand.
The Australian wrestler is the youngest person to win both the NXT UK Women’s Champion and the NXT Women’s Champion titles. Her athletic skills are not limited to wrestling, as she regularly practices and trains in swimming, karate, rugby, netball and football.
Toni Storm
Next up is the 24-year-old Toni Storm – real name Toni Rossall. Like Ripley, she is a former NXT UK Women's Champion and currently competes in NXT UK. Storm began her wrestling training in Australia when she was 5, deciding that she wanted to become a professional wrestler at 18.
The New Zealander then moved to the UK to develop her career, before touring in Finland, France, Germany, and Spain. She was signed to the WWE after taking part in the organisation's try-out camp in Melbourne in 2014 as a 19-year-old.
Velveteen Dream
At 24, Velveteen Dream – real name Patrick Clark Jr – is one of the youngest male wrestlers in the WWE. He competed in the sixth season of the WWE reality show Tough Enough in 2015, where he placed ninth overall, but has since gone on to become a major talent in the company.
The US wrestler's persona is reportedly inspired by the musician Prince, and was described by the WWE as "a mysterious yet intoxicating presence [...] sporting a frilled, jewelled look that would have fit right in onstage during Prince's Purple Rain Tour".
The Velveteen Dream, who performs on NXT, won the NXT North American Championship in 2019, and the NXT Year-End Award for Rivalry of the Year in 2017, for his rivalry with Aleister Black.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

UAE's role in anti-extremism recognised
General John Allen, President of the Brookings Institution research group, commended the role the UAE has played in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
He told a Globsec debate of the UAE’s "hugely outsized" role in the fight against Isis.
"It’s trite these days to say that any country punches above its weight, but in every possible way the Emirates did, both militarily, and very importantly, the UAE was extraordinarily helpful on getting to the issue of violent extremism," he said.
