Amal Al Maamari has a simple business philosophy. Her theory is: “Do what you love, work for what you love and, ultimately, follow your passion.”

This past July, the mother-of-three embarked on the entrepreneurial journey. When she saw a for-sale sign outside Art Beat studio in Al Mushrif, she bought it without delay.

Since childhood, the Emirati has enjoyed glass painting.

“In school, our art teacher taught us everything from crochet to painting on aluminium,” the 35-year-old recalls.

Art Beat, she says, is an opportunity to be surrounded by art-related items and, at the same time, meet people’s demands for a family-orientated hub.

“Before, whenever I went out with children in pursuit of finding a family activity centre, I rarely found any in the capital.”

A background in art is not necessary to explore the different forms of art, Al Maamari says.

“In Art Beat studio, just create whatever you want. It is the journey and enjoyment you get when playing with colours – that’s what matters.”

Families can also try decoupage, acrylic and oil painting and sugar art.

To Al Maamari, art is a relaxing hobby.

“When I am engrossed in any type of art, I forget all of life’s worries,” she says. “I am in my own world and ambience. Not bothered with the outside world, but focused on being creative.”

Art Beat, like the name suggests, is all about revealing your inner creativity by choosing whatever is available in the studio.

Over the past few months, she has managed to improve her artistic skills through her studio. “I have noticed my creativity has increased since I took over the studio. I created a cake using sugar art and craft. This is because I have more time to focus.”

My favourite book

Steve Jobs. His biography is inspiring.

What does Art Beat studio mean to you?

It’s my fourth child.

How would you define yourself?

No limit to learning. No restriction. I am not very fond of the word “favourite”. I like exploring everything. That’s who I am.

My favourite architecture

I like Victorian style. When I was in Britain, I [also] visited a few castles in Oxford.

Are you an urban or rural person?

I like the countryside more than the hustle and bustle of city life. I recently went to Dublin [pictured]. The sight of nature in Northern Ireland was relaxing [as well].

Name a piece of art you're proud of?

I created Barbie with butterflies using sugar art. The result was satisfying. I can see for myself how my skills have developed over the years.

My favourite movie

The Hobbit. The production, plot, cinematography and effects in the movie were mind-blowing.

How do you unwind?

I have three girls, so I don’t spend much time with myself. Once a month, I go to Al Raha Beach, have breakfast and restore [my] energy.

My favourite perfume

DKNY Apple.

My role model

My father. My father was not educated; he was adamant that his children received a proper education.
