Release the Sunbird is the side project of Zach Rogue, the singer from the endearing indie outfit Rogue Wave. Teaming up with the bassist Kenny Childers and the singer Kate Long, the debut album Come Back to Us is a hazy acoustic treat. The songwriting here is more traditional than that employed in Rogue Wave. It's All Around You and the album's title track have a real Americana feel to the acoustic guitars and breathy vocals evoking broad vistas. A New You is a delicate acoustic number showcasing the sweet harmonies of Rogue and Long. Meanwhile, the wafting Why Can't You Look at Yourself evokes what sounds like one of the band's influences: Ryan Adams, particularly his album Heartbreaker. The whole affair may not quicken the pulse but it's not a bad way to spend a lazy summer afternoon.
