The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced its film nominees for outstanding screenwriting in 2021, with films Judas and the Black Messiah, One Night in Miami ... and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom all receiving nominations.

In 2021, for the first time, films that were scheduled for theatrical release but streamed instead owing to the pandemic were considered.

Other awards season favourites to make the list of nominees are Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal, however, some titles, including Mank and Nomadland, are notably missing from the list. This is nothing new, though, as the WGA maintains authority over whether scripts are produced under a Writer's Guild contract, and will withhold non-members from being part of the awards.

The event, which honours the best in film, television, radio and video game writing, will reveal the winners on Sunday, March 21.
