Singer-songwriter Camila Cabello will star in Kay Cannon’s musical retelling of the Cinderella story for Sony Pictures.
Cabello will also be involved in the music for the project, which will be produced by British comic James Corden, alongside Leo Pearlman, through their Fulwell73 banner.
The new Cinderella will be a music-oriented version of the traditional tale of the orphaned girl with an evil stepmother and wicked stepsisters. Sony is putting the project on the fast track for production, according to Variety.
The best-known Cinderella movies to date have been Disney's classic animation, released in 1950, and two live-action remakes: 1997's version starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, and the 2015 film with Lily James. The latter grossed $543 million (Dh1.9 billion) worldwide.
Cuban native Cabello, who was part of girl band Fifth Harmony before going solo, hit superstar status last year with her single Havana and her debut album Camila, which debuted at No. 1 on 110 different international iTunes charts around the world.
Cannon was an Emmy-nominated writer on 30 Rock and wrote the Pitch Perfect comedies. She made her feature debut with Universal's comedy Blockers, starring Kathryn Newton, Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz and John Cena.
Corden himself is no stranger to the world of fairy tales. Having found fame as the lead character's sidekick in BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey, he headed for Hollywood, where as well as hosting reality shows and his own late night chat show, he starred alongside Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep in Disney's 2014 Brothers' Grimm mash-up Into the Woods, which closed the Dubai International Film Festival that year.
