Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who is in her 80s and has gained worldwide acclaim throughout her career, particularly for her work with polka dots, will be exhibiting in Sharjah next year. The news was revealed yesterday on Instagram by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, the president and founder of Sharjah Art Foundation. She posted an image of a painting of a bluebird by Kusama dated 1981 with the caption: “An exhibition of Yayoi Kusama’s work will open @sharjahart Autumn 2016”.
This is exciting news for art lovers in the UAE as Kusama is one of the biggest names in contemporary art. It also comes as Sharjah Art Foundation reveals its programme for this autumn, including an exhibition dedicated to light, organised by the Hayward Gallery in London and an educational residency programme that began in March and culmintes in October.
