A sneak peek at Luxury magazine’s May cover

The cover of the May issue of Luxury magazine shows a model standing on top of a rocky cliff located in Oman's Al Hajar mountain range. She is dressed in a dramatic tiered gown from the Gucci spring/summer 2016 runway, with accessories by Etro, Jennifer Fisher and Dubai-based jewellery designer D by Dalia. Our fashion team was hosted by Alila Jabal Akhdar, an exquisite resort nestled within the mountains, offering guests a priceless view of the surrounding natural wilderness. To produce the fashion editorial, titled The Edge of Reason, we braved steep rocks and scary drops, traipsing outside of the outermost barriers of the lodge-like resort (at our own risk) to capture images that would do justice to the stony, serene setting.

Pick up a copy of the magazine, out tomorrow with The National newspaper, to see the full fashion shoot, and to read about contemporary carpet designer Jan Kath, the latest collection from Montblanc and the new hot spot for Japanese cuisine in Dubai. Also, find out what makes the new Drive de Cartier watch so covetable, and why a certain piece of furniture was recently auctioned off for Dh1,450,000.

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away

It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.

The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.

But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.

At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.

The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.

After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.

Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.

And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.

At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.

And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

How to come clean about financial infidelity
  • Be honest and transparent: It is always better to own up than be found out. Tell your partner everything they want to know. Show remorse. Inform them of the extent of the situation so they know what they are dealing with.
  • Work on yourself: Be honest with yourself and your partner and figure out why you did it. Don’t be ashamed to ask for professional help.
  • Give it time: Like any breach of trust, it requires time to rebuild. So be consistent, communicate often and be patient with your partner and yourself.
  • Discuss your financial situation regularly: Ensure your spouse is involved in financial matters and decisions. Your ability to consistently follow through with what you say you are going to do when it comes to money can make all the difference in your partner’s willingness to trust you again.
  • Work on a plan to resolve the problem together: If there is a lot of debt, for example, create a budget and financial plan together and ensure your partner is fully informed, involved and supported.
