RAS AL KHAIMAH // Three Asians have been arrested over 61 thefts at labour accommodation in the emirate.

RAK Police received a number of reports of theft at labour camps so set up an investigation team and intensified the patrols in the areas, said Colonel Abdullah Ali Munkis, director of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Investigations led to a mobile phone offered as payment at a grocery store from a man who did not have the money to pay. The phone turned out to be stolen and this information led to a suspect’s home.

“After taking all legal procedures, we raided his residence and arrested him [and found] money of different currencies, mobile phones, wristwatches, gold and electronic devices,” Col Ali Munkis said.

The man admitted to 61 thefts, police said, working alongside two of his countrymen.

The other two suspects, who were living illegally in the UAE, were arrested at their accommodation.

The case is now with prosecutors to press charges.

Col Munkis urged all labourers to be cautious and not leave expensive items and money at their accommodation without ensuring that they are in a secure place.

Police have started a campaign to raise awareness among labourers about how to keep their property safe.
