DHAKA // Bangladesh police are investigating a case of suspected suicide by a seamstress who survived the collapse of a multi-storey building that killed more than 1,100 people last year, officials said on Monday.

The woman, identified by her first name, Salma, was found hanging in her rented home in the capital, Dhaka, on Friday, said Kamal Hossain, a police official.

Salma was rescued several days after the illegally constructed, eight-storey Rana Plaza collapsed on April 24 last year, killing 1,129 people. It was the worst disaster in the history of the garment industry.

There were several miraculous rescues in the days after the collapse. The most famous was of Reshma Begum, who was pulled alive 17 days after the disaster. She currently works for a hotel in Dhaka’s upscale Gulshan area.
