An auction of Oprah Winfrey's personal items in California raised at least US$600,000 (Dh2.2 million) for her leadership academy in South Africa, the Los Angeles Times reported. Winfrey took in more money than expected when 584 items were auctioned at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Carpinteria on Saturday, according to the newspaper. A painting estimated at between $300 to $500 went for $6,000. All of Winfrey's items had been sold by 6.16pm, but the auction proceeded with donations from Bob Greene – Winfrey's exercise guru. DIFF recognises Egyptian critic with Lifetime award
The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) has announced a second recipient for this year's Lifetime Achievement award – it will be presented to the veteran Egyptian film critic Samir Farid. It is the first time that the festival has awarded the honour to a film critic. The DIFF chairman Abdulhamid Juma explained the choice: "Samir Farid is a giant in his field and has been tireless in promoting cinema, both within the Arab world and beyond, for 50 years. The Lifetime Achievement award honours his passion for Arab cinema, which we at DIFF hold as part of our core ethos." The film festival runs from December 6 to 14. – The National staff
Jay Z to launch perfume
The music producer and rapper Jay Z is launching his first fragrance for men on November 20. The 43-year-old's men's fragrance will be launched exclusively at the luxury department stores Barneys, which he collaborated with as part of his fashion line, before it is available for the rest of the US at the end of the month, reports femalefirst.co.uk. "For the 30 days before Christmas, it will be impossible not to know he has a fragrance," Jay Z's fragrance licensee told wwd.com. The singer reportedly rejected 3,200 possible names for his perfume before finally deciding that he wanted to name it Gold. The product is expected to be released internationally in 2014. – IANS
N’Sync reunite for Kirkpatrick’s wedding
Members of the boy band N'Sync came together once again at the wedding of their fellow member Chris Kirkpatrick. The now- disbanded group consisted of Justin Timberlake, J C Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick, who married his long-time girlfriend Karly Skladany, enjoyed a four-day party in the Florida Keys, eonline.com reported. Ender’s Game blasts to top of weekend box office
Weekend moviegoers in North America chose science fiction over slapstick. Ender's Game took the No 1 slot at the weekend box office, earning $28 million (Dh103m) in its opening weekend and sending Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa to second place, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Lionsgate's adaptation earned an additional $2 million in five international territories. Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
