Thank you for Yalla learn the lingo (March 21) about the importance of learning the native language of where you live.
Learning Arabic is awesome. I wish there were more courses and easier access to them.

Confused over new airline security rules
I am writing about the ban on taking computers into the cabins of aircraft that fly direct from the UAE to the United States (UK joins US's plane cabin ban on devices, March 22) .
I once put a camera and laptop in checked luggage and both were stolen. I’m not going to do that again unless security gets beefed up.
Suddenly, layovers look preferable to flying non-stop.
S Knuteson, Dubai
I’m all for security but this doesn’t really make sense.
If there is intelligence regarding certain devices such as laptops, checking them into the hold would still allow those devices onto the aircraft.
R Bradley, Abu Dhabi
I never pack my computer in my checked luggage simply because I don’t want it damaged or stolen.
Is the airline going to compensate me if there’s damage to my laptop or tablet? What if it’s stolen – and please don’t say that that rarely or never happens.
Jean Lewis, Abu Dhabi
You can't check in devices with lithium ion batteries, so how do you check in something you can't check in? Moh Alchalabi, Dubai
In this day and age anything is possible. Kudos to the airlines for taking extra security measures.

Animal cruelty is unacceptable
The cruelty described in Dogfighting fears after badly injured victim found on Yas Island (March 22) made me very sad.
Whoever did this should be punished. Their actions absolutely misrepresent what people are truly like in the UAE.
Fatima Suhail, Sharjah
People like this must be made an example of if we are to stop animal cruelty. Animals suffer as humans do and they are also God’s creation.
K Conrad, Abu Dhabi
If a person can be this cruel to a helpless animal, what else are they capable of?
The people responsible for this need some serious jail time and/or community service hours. It is unacceptable that humans are this inhumane in this day and age.
Carla Botha, Dubai
I am hoping for a thorough investigation into this incident, and the maximum jail sentence and maximum financial penalty for those found guilty. I also urge the authorities not to return this poor dog to its very undeserving owner. Nour T, Abu Dhabi
People who pit animals against one another for “entertainment” are sick. No animal should be treated this way. Emma Schlegel, Dubai
I hope these people will be joining the Dubai Zoo cleaning squad. Name withheld by request
Compensation is very welcome
I am glad that du is doing something for those affected by the problems with its service this week (Du plans compensation for customers affected by mobile outage, March 21).
The interruption to service was extremely frustrating.

A matter of setting a code
I refer to Faisal Al Yafai's column, The European hijab ban is really a victory for Muslim women (March 21). How can this be called a "ban"? Nothing has been banned.
As I understand it, the court decision simply allows employers to set uniform dress codes within their own companies to comport with their desired image.
