“Renegade princess” is the theme of Zayan the Label’s latest line — which was immediately evident in the colour palette: pastel pink and stark black.
The lace embroidery stood out — and so did the cutesy patches sewed on the clothes. “Pretty”, “Love”, “Fairytale”, they read, reminiscent of Kenzo’s super-trendy embroidered logos. There was also an adorable ribbon pattern print that looked like spiders.
Designer Zayan Ghandour says the collection was inspired by Pretty Woman. "Many of the pieces directly reference outfits worn by Julia Roberts," she pointed out, though they were less Julia and more ballet dancers on holiday.
The real standouts were the few sportswear-inspired pieces made from neoprene, which demanded a closer look to fully appreciate the craftsmanship involved.
Perhaps Ms Ghandour, who cofounded the popular UAE boutique s*uce, should consider an entirely neoprene collection in the future.
