Careers in retail can be truly rewarding

There has never been a better time to be in retail, and it’s time that those who aren’t in the industry learn why they should be.

Where there are people with the money to shop, there are retailers and retail career prospects. But there are few places in the world where this sector is as vibrant and crucial as in the UAE, where it’s one of the key drivers of the non-oil economy. Sadly, too few Emiratis consider retail as a viable career option, preferring instead the “safe haven” of government employment.

For that reason, the establishment of an academy to provide vocational training in this sector is welcome. As The National reported yesterday, the academy, to be launched by the Higher Colleges of Technology and Majid Al Futtaim Charity Foundation, aims to open up meaningful careers in retail for UAE nationals. However, if it is to succeed in its mission, it will be necessary to clear up some of the misperceptions.

Contrary to popular belief, retail jobs are not inherently demeaning nor – as Dr Naji Al Mahdi, of the National Institute of Vocational Education and Training, pointed out – are they simply about “selling garments and food”. The retail industry is among the most diverse and exciting. Jobs range from running a market stall to managing a gift shop on a cruise liner, or even becoming the chief executive of a global conglomerate. There is the chance to work directly with customers or sit in a back office crunching numbers and identifying business opportunities. Employees can grow, innovate and give back, as well as enjoy themselves.

One advantage is the opportunity to be constantly surrounded by people – not just customers, but co-workers and managers – allowing employees to learn how to develop and maintain professional relationships. There is no doubt that there are some disadvantages, including long shifts and work at nights and on weekends. However, irregular hours actually suit some people, including those who prefer to work while others are at leisure and pursue their own interests while others are working.

Perhaps the most compelling argument is that retail is a growth sector; one that continued to employ people even during the recession. According to a report by Business Monitor International, the UAE’s retail sales are forecast to grow from an estimated Dh113.87bn in 2011 to Dh151.36bn by 2015. A bright future awaits those willing to think outside the box when it comes to a career.
