The lives lost in the Las Vegas attack - in pictures

CHRIS ROYBAT, 28, from southern California had recently returned from a tour of Afghanistan with the Navy. His mother said: "He went to combat and came back without being injured and then goes to a concert and dies."

His friend and shipmate Matthew Austin wrote on Facebook: "It breaks my heart and infuriates me that a veteran can come home from war unharmed and events like these occur."

SANDRA CASEY,  had been a special needs teacher at Manhattan Beach Middle School in California for nine years. She went to the concert with her fiance, Christopher Williams, and several colleagues and was fatally wounded in the back. The school district superintendent Mike Matthews said students, employees and parents were devastated by her death. "We lost a spectacular teacher," he said.

SUSAN SMITH, 53, was the mother of two childen and office manager for Vista Elementary School in California. She had worked for the school district for 16 years and had gone to Las Vegas with two friends.

DENISE BURDITUS, a mother-of-two from West Virginia, was at the concert with her husband, Tony. He said she died in his arms.

CHARLESTON HARTFIELD, 34, was an off-duty Las Vegas police officer and ex-serviceman, who also coached youth football.

BAILEY SCHWEITZER, 20, from Bakersfield, California worked in her family's business and was a member of her local church. She was at the concert with her mother when she was shot.

SONNY MELTON, 29, a nurse from Big Sandy, Tennessee was at the concert with his wife, Heather, an orthopaedic surgeon. She said he saved her life but paid with his own. "He grabbed me and started running, when I felt him get shot in the back."

RACHAEL PARKER, 33, was a records technician for the police in Manhattan Beach, California and made the trip to Las Vegas with three colleagues. She was shot at the concert and died later in hospital.

JENNY PARKS, a kindergarten teacher from California, and her husband, Bobby, were visiting her two brothers in Las Vegas. Both she and her husband were shot. Ms Parks died and Mr Parks had surgery for gunshot wounds to his arm and finger.

THOMAS DAY, a builder from California, was at the concert with his four children, who all survived.

RHONDA LEROQUE, from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, was at the concert with her husband, Jason. She was shot in the back of the head.

JENNIFER T IRVINE, a lawyer, was on holiday in Las Vegas

At least three Canadians  are among the dead:

JESSICA KLYMCHUK, 34, was a bus driver, school assistant and mother-of-four from Valleyview, Alberta.

CALLA MEDIG from Jasper, Alberta and JORDAN MCILDOON from British Columbia were also killed.
