ROME // A man convicted in the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher has appealed his conviction to Italy's highest criminal court. Rudy Hermann Guede of the Ivory Coast has been convicted of sexual assault and murder. An appeals court in December upheld a lower court's conviction and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. Guede's lawyer Nicodemo Gentile said today that no date for the appeal before the Court of Cassation has been set.
Mr Gentile said Guede wants to prove his innocence. He has admitted being in the house the night of the murder but denied killing Ms Kercher. American student Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito have also been convicted of murder. Knox received 26 years in prison; Sollecito, 25. They deny wrongdoing.
