Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Sunday thanked US leader Donald Trump for intelligence that helped to foil attacks on Russian soil, the Kremlin said.

Mr Putin thanked Mr Trump "for the transfer, through special services, of information allowing the prevention of terrorist acts in Russia", his office said.

The FSB, a successor to the KGB, told Russian news agencies that two Russian citizens were arrested on Friday, suspected of planning a terrorist attack in St Petersburg during New Year festivities.

Moscow and Washington are at odds on many issues but both regularly stress their mutual determination to fight terrorism.
