Royal wedding: Prince Harry asks William to be his best man

Meghan Markle appeared in a wedding dress for the season finale of her hit US television show Suits

Prince Harry's older brother Prince William is to serve as best man at the royal wedding on May 19, Kensington Palace said on Thursday.

"The Duke of Cambridge is honoured to have been asked, and is very much looking forward to supporting his brother," Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The palace made the announcement with a shared photo of the princes as young boys.

Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in St George's Chapel, Windsor, is to take place before 600 guests. The couple have invited another 1,000 members of the public onto the grounds of Windsor Castle to view the procession.

The noon wedding will be followed by a one-hour carriage procession around Windsor before the private reception. An evening event will also be held for 200 guests. The Spice Girls are reportedly among those who have been invited, although dignitaries including Prime Minister Theresa May and President Donald Trump will not attend as the wedding is not a state occassion.

Prince Harry, who is sixth in line to the thrown, was the Duke of Cambridge's best man at his wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011.

The palace has also announced that a gospel choir and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason will perform at the wedding.

Ms Markle, former star of the US television show Suits, ended her stint on the show in a wedding gown. Her character, Rachel Zane, finally married her co-star Patrick J. Adams, who has played Michael Adams on the legal drama for seven seasons.

The series finale aired on Wednesday.
