Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday said data supported his easing of lockdown in England, with the next major steps due to take place next month.
Mr Johnson said he looked forward to getting his hair cut and having a pint of beer in the garden of a pub, among the activities permitted if stage two of his unlocking plan proceeds on April 12. All non-essential shops are also due to reopen from that date.
On Monday, there will be a smaller change, allowing groups of six to meet up outside. Foreign travel will be banned until at least May 17, which is also the earliest date indoor hospitality and performance venues might reopen.
Although Mr Johnson has outlined dates at which he plans to ease restrictions, he has been clear that "data, not dates" will determine whether the unlocking can proceed to schedule.
"As things stand, I can see absolutely nothing in the data to dissuade me from continuing along our road map to freedom, unlocking our economy and getting back to the life we love," Mr Johnson said in a speech to the Conservative spring conference.
His comments came after data showed a recent steep fall in infections were starting to level off.
Britain's Office for National Statistics said on Friday said the prevalence of Covid-19 infections in England was no longer falling and had levelled off at an estimated one in 340 people.
England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said earlier this week that a slowdown in the drop in infection rates was to be expected after schools reopened on March 8.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
