The husband of Queen Elizabeth II will not face criminal charges after a car crash left two women injured, prosecutors said on Thursday.
The decision comes less than a week after Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke of Edinburgh, 97, had agreed to give up his driving licence.
The duke pulled out of a driveway onto the A149 near the royal residence of Sandringham Palace on January 2017 colliding with a small Kia driven by Ellie Townsend, and carrying another woman and a nine-month-old baby boy. Both women suffered minor injuries but the baby was unharmed.
The duke’s Land Rover was left on its side and he was helped from the car by a passing motorist.
Prince Philip wrote a letter of apology to one of the injured women days after the collision, explaining that the sun was in his eyes when he pulled onto the main road.
The Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement that it “took into account all of the circumstances in this case, including the level of culpability, the age of the driver and the surrender of the driving licence.”
It added: “We have decided that it would not be in the public interest to prosecute.”
Buckingham Palace said Prince Philip “respects the decision taken by the Crown Prosecution Service”.
