Aalborg's case of mistaken identity

The Italian referee Matteo Trefoloni appears certain to be in trouble with Uefa after sending off the wrong player in Celtic's 0-0 draw with Aalborg. Ten minutes remained at Celtic Park when the Greek forward Giorgios Samaras was brought down by Aalborg defender Michael Jakobsen just outside the area and Trefoloni reached for his red card. To the amazement of the Aalborg players, he showed it to the wrong player, Michael Beauchamp, who appeared puzzled as he was ordered from the field. "It definitely looked like an easy decision," the Australian defender Beauchamp said. "He had his two helpers on the sidelines as well and all three of them got it wrong. A bit disappointing for myself but that's football sometimes."

Jakobsen stayed on the pitch to help secure a draw against the Scottish side, for whom Barry Robson missed a first-half penalty. The Aalborg manager Bruce Rioch, said: "It was very unfortunate, a real body blow for Michael, who was fantastic with the rest of the boys. " The Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli hailed the performance of in-form striker Alberto Gilardino in his team's Champions League who scored twice in the 2-2 draw at Lyon.

"Gilardino is a player that always sees the back of the net," said Prandelli. "His wish to show his potential was evident when he left a top club like AC Milan this summer to join Fiorentina." * Agencies
